ONGOING DISASTER MANAGEMENT PROJECT

BAMBOO SHELTER HOUSE FOR EARTHQUAKE VICTIMS OF LISANKHU VDC, SINDHUPALCHOWK

OBJECTIVES OF THE PROJECT

  • To Help the earthquke victims family through constructing the bamboo shelter house.
  • To introduce the bamboo is really eco friendly and strong material.
  • To show the traditional trend for housing concept.

Bamboo house shelters can support disaster affected people between the emergency and the time when they are able to rebuild longer term housing. If well designed, the materials from the Bamboo House can be re-used for housing. Bamboo House are intended to provide shelter between an emergency and the time when durable housing is completed. However, organizations often do not have the resources to build durable shelters after a Bamboo House response. Before beginning a Bamboo House program, ensure that there is a strategy in place. The strategy should consider all settlement options such as those who are staying with host families. It should also include provision to support people to find durable housing. A Bamboo House design brief must balance the ideal building from a structural perspective with constraints such as limited time and budgets. HOMES-Nepal would like to construct the bamboo houses for Lisankhu VDC Sindhupalchowk District. According to our field survey data, we found around 80 houses are totally destroyed due to earthquake. The organization has been constructing 5 houses for earthquake victims family in first phase as a model houses.

DESIGNING A SHELTER APPROPRIATENESS

Bamboo Houses (10’ X 9’ size i.e. 360 sq ft. plinth area) and 8 ft high, three rooms and one varanda to rehabilitate displaced families whose houses have been completely destroyed by earthquake in Sindhupalchowk district. There will be maximum uses of the local resources such as Wood, Bricks, Bamboo, Sand, Stone and CGI sheet available on the site and nearby market. Following a disaster, affected people often begin repairing their houses or permanently re-building. In some cases however, building Bamboo House is a required step to support shelter recovery following a disaster. There might be many ways of supporting affected people find suitable shelter. Building Bamboo House might be one of them.

If a shelter design is appropriate, it reflects the needs, local culture, vulnerability and capacities of the affected community and the resources available. As every context is different, so shelter designs must be adapted to each location, response and project. What might be a good solution in one location may not work in another. However, one of the key features of Bamboo House is that they can be relocated, they can be upgraded and that the materials can be re-used.
